Psychotherapy & Counselling with Helen Acton
The way I work is concerned with exploring the choices we make in our lives, the meanings we ascribe to aspects of our world, and the ways in which we can become stuck with our ways of being. It is an opportunity to explore how you relate to the people in your life and to the experiences you have; a space in which to reflect upon the decisions you are making and the possibilities which may lie ahead. My approach to therapy is called existential-phenomenological, which is a lot more down-to-earth than it sounds!
Together we will try to work towards a deep understanding of your experience and look at the situation from different perspectives and new angles. Within the wholly supportive and non-judgmental environment I provide, you may begin to challenge your feelings and the assumptions you make about your life, and gain some clarity about where you are, and where you want to be. I won't give you advice or tell you what to do; I believe that you are ultimately the expert on your own life. First and foremost, therapy with me is a safe and confidential space in which to share how you are feeling, and be heard.
Though the existential-phenomenological approach to therapy is primarily concerned with the way in which a client is experiencing life right now, I also have a particular interest in Attachment Theory and the effect that early experiences can have upon our adult relationships.
People from all walks of life come to therapy for many different reasons. The therapy I offer can be especially helpful for clients experiencing relationship issues, sex and sexuality issues, a sense of being stuck, a sense of unease, difficulty making decisions, depression, life changes, a general sense of dissatisfaction, a lack of purpose, and issues around self-worth and self-esteem.
I offer short-term counselling for those wishing to explore a specific issue or event in their lives, or ongoing therapy if you feel that now is the time to think more deeply about what is going on for you. I know that approaching therapy for the first time can feel like a daunting prospect, and I shall be happy to answer any questions you may have. The relationship between you and your therapist is at the heart of therapy and it's important that we feel comfortable with each other.
