Hypnotherapy with Sara Jeffery MAR, BSc Hons, Dip Cog Hyp, MNLP, MNCH (lic)

About Sara Jeffery    I am a fully qualified and certified Cognitive Hypnotherapist.  I am also a Master Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), which enables me to use a combination of techniques and skills in my practice.  I trained with the internationally renowned Quest Institute (http://www.questinstitute.co.uk/).  As a member of the National Council of Hypnotherapists (NCH), I received a high standard of training and abide by a comprehensive Code of Ethics and Practice, which the NCH actively implements.(www.hypnotherapists.org.uk)  I am also practice reflexology.

What is Hypnosis?    Most people are familiar with trance; have you ever been driving a familiar route to work, listening to your favourite radio station and arrived at your destination, having been lost in your thoughts and unaware of much of the journey?  Or been so involved in the fate of characters in a good book that you don't hear your partner offering you a cup of tea?  Those are just two examples of trance states.

Hypnosis is a natural and familiar state of mind.  It uses a range of naturally occuring states of altered awareness, called trance states.  These states may vary from momentary distractions and 'absences' (e.g. day-dreaming), through enhanced states of relaxation to deep states of inward focus and awareness.

What is Hypnotherapy?    Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis to help resolve physical or emotional problems, get rid of unwanted habits, fears and phobias, and free individuals from limiting beliefs.

During a therapeutic session you may be led into hypnosis quite formally or quite naturally, depending on the requirement of the problem and your needs.  Mental processes which can occur in any of these states are generally far more flexible and potentially far more powerful in effecting change than those we can achieve in most everyday states of active, conscious awareness.  A light trance state is often sufficient to help bring about desired, effective change.  Hypnosis is a natural, safe way of connecting with the unconscious.

What will happen during a session?    Because each person's perceptions and experiences are different, well-trained hypnotherapists will give you a designer service, as opposed to off-the-peg.  You will initially discuss your problem, and talk about what you would like to change. Your therapist will then tailor the techniques they use to help solve your problems.

Can I be hypnotised against my will?    Nobody can be hypnotised against their will, and no-one under hypnosis can be induced to do anything against his or her will.  Whatever moral and ethical codes you hold in a normal waking state will still be in place under hypnosis.

Will it work for my problem?    Cognitive Hypnotherapy and NLP can help with most issues in which the mind has an influence.  It can work well for:

  • Overcoming fears and phobias
  • Boosting confidence
  • Managing major life changes
  • Freeing yourself from unwanted habits (e.g. smoking, over-eating)
  • Improving your confidence in all areas (e.g. business, sports, public speaking)
  • Getting 'unstuck'
  • Eliminating anxiety and nerves (e.g. exams, driving test)
  • Managing health issues and pain
  • Feeling confident and comfortable in pregnancy and childbirth
  • Reducing stress

Hypnotherapy is supported by more scientific research than any other complementary therapy and hypnotism has been recognised as valid by the British Medical Association since 1955.  Today's therapists work from an understanding of the mind and of the mind-body connection that is based on modern neuroscience.

How many sessions will I need?    Using a very light state of trance means that change can take place more quickly than simply through talking.  This means treatment is often surprisingly brief.  The number of sessions required depends on the nature of the particular problem.  Breaking an unwanted habit, smoking for example, may take only one or two sessions, whereas other problems may take longer.

Do I get value for money?    The therapy effect continues to multiply long after the sessions have ended, giving you tools to take away that you can apply in all parts of your life.
