We live in a time and place where the pressures of life can easily overload our delicately balanced health systems; stresses such as overwork, poor diet, inadequate sleep and lack of exercise all take their toll. We see the evidence all around us; too much stress in our lives can lead to illness.
Scientific evidence now demonstrates how the mind and body work closely together. When we are feeling happy and relaxed, our bodies create endorphins, seratonin and other natural “feel-good” chemicals which help to keep us healthy. When we are stressed; over time the bodies defences become weakened and we can become unwell.
Research shows that regular meditation practice can help us lower our stress levels and find a sense of inner peace. In the weekly Meditation for Health classes Gill shares simple exercises & meditation techniques that can help release tension from your body and mind and lower your stress levels naturally.
The classes are gentle, informal and relaxed. They include; gentle stretching exercises to release tension from the body, a short sitting mindfulness based meditation and a longer guided meditation/ visualisation, where we visualise vibrant health, relaxation and positive well-being throughout the body and mind. Regular participants report a deep sense of relaxation followed by a refreshing, energised feeling.
Diagnosed HIV positive in 1989, local artist Gill Hickman has remained healthy without medication for more than 21 years. She believes that her art and her daily meditations help to keep her well. Some of her current paintings are inspired by the strong healthy cells she visualises.
“I began meditating at Findhorn in 1993 while pregnant with my son. At that time, I thought I probably wouldn't live past 1999. For the last twelve years meditation has part of my daily practice every morning. My health is very important to me, so my meditations have tended to focus on building and maintaining a strong immune system. The meditations I share have developed out of this daily practice. “
Gill has been leading meditation classes in various settings since May 2008, and at the Sunflower Centre since November 2008. (Classes were previously known as Happy Cells)
