James Britton

I graduated from the British School of Osteopathy in 1991 and have practiced in a wide variety of clinical settings, from Sports Clinics and the athletic care of elite sportsmen through to general Osteopathic Practice, and specialist Infant and Mother Clinics.

Although this wide range of clinical experiences has shaped the way that I practice Osteopathy it is still based on taking a detailed history, physical examination and assessment of the musculoskeletal system by observation and palpation to identify restriction to motion, tenderness, tissue changes and asymmetry. In addition I examine specifically for the quality of stabilisation of the spine and control of movement, which often underlies many other musculoskeletal problems.

I understand that no one single approach works for every individual so employ a wide range of Osteopathic techniques from guided movement, articulation, mobilisation and manipulation of joints and soft tissues, through to functional techniques of muscle energy and counterstrain and gentle cranial approaches.

Osteopathic treatment is a step by step process that restores normal musculoskeletal function (or at least reduces the degree of dysfunction), improves the condition of the tissue causing symptoms in order to reduce those symptoms, assists tissue repair and aims to be integrative. The techniques are only part of the strategy in restoring a patient back to health, I often prescribe exercises to improve control of movement and to develop both strength and relaxation and advise on improving general health and wellbeing as the cornerstone of maintenance and prevention regime.

I do have some areas of special interest:

  • Pre and post-operative rehabilitation
  • Injuries from overuse or trauma, particularly peripheral joints, hip, knee, ankle, shoulder elbow and hand
  • Rehabilitation programmes
  • Injury prevention, enhancing performance and improving recovery in sports
  • Pregnancy and newborn

I am thrilled to be joining the team at the Sunflower Centre and looking forward to making a positive contribution to the health of patients.
